7.1.25 - New Year
Happy New Year :) Not really any new music to report on since I've been sticking with TOOL and TISM. I've been thinking about where I want to take my art for this year. I was going to open commissions back up very soon once I get my shit together and also start selling some stuff. I wanted to make more physical/traditional media, which will hopefully be easier once I move into a bigger space (soon...). I've been painting a lot more than I was previously but previously was essentially nothing so thats not a hard bar to surpass. I've been finding it's a little difficult to find a good balance with the energy that goes into my art and keeping up with posting online - I get burnt out so easily, I earnestly don't get how other people do it. Either way, expect to hear from me soon :)
17.12.24 - Artist Highlight: TOOL
TOOL is so fucking good.. I've been listening to them for like 4 days in a row. I had never actually understood what the big 'TOOL-heads' were onto but it's just kinda clicked. I was previously pretty casual listener to most of their music (bar Stinkfist; that song has an other-worldly grip on my brain) but after revisiting them on a whim -- oh my god they're putting actual ecstasy in their music I swear to god. Been listening to them while I'm at work and it makes my day 1000% more bareable. I absolutely love when my brain finds music to fixate on, it gives me LIFE. My favourite album of theirs is probably Ænema, though my first exposure to their music was 10,000 Days, of which my sibling really liked and had recommended to me. Ænema and Undertow are probably the ones I'm listening to the most at the moment and I think Stinkfist probably still is my favourite song currently. Fucking love the way Maynard James Keenan sings "Show me that you love me and we belong together" amusingly on a song about anal fisting feels so visceral (pun accidentally intended) but so passionate and I cannot think of a song that does this in the same way. What became of subtlety? |

8.12.24 - Spotify Wrapped
No surprises here honestly. I put the previous years ones bc why not :3. Left is most recent, 2021 was when I first started using Spotify. Grim Salvo my dearly beloved, I ♥ hyperfixating on bands. And evident recovered MSI listener...
7.12.24 - Exhausted
I didn't really intend to put anything too personal here but I feel like I kinda need the outlet, since I still keep hearing about my breakups (plural) from ages ago and I wanna vaguepost. It's just kinda strange to keep finding out more and more terrible things that snap me out of the rose-coloured glasses outlook I used to have. I realise now how much bad shit they did to me and people around me. I don't like what's happened but I honestly think it was ultimately the best thing for everyone and let me end up where I am now. I'm so happy that I have been able to start making a life for myself, by myself. To be able to meet people who I love and care about and who love and care about me. It's so exhausting to still have to worry about it, especially since I still run into them. I feel like it's because I have so much unresolved shit - it stresses me out when I think about it, though I'm glad I'm in a space now where it feels so distant and seperate now.
Don't ever be in no polycule, worst mistake of my life. /j
3.11.24 - Soulful Dive
I was never really exposed to a lot of older soul music growing up which has caused the genre to be almost entirely unfamiliar to me. If you asked me to name a pivotal soul or funk artist off the top of my head, you would have to give me a few minutes.
So what has now prompted this post - recently a musically well-versed friend of mine shared some new music I liked. Elaine Brown's 1969 album Seize The Time. What proceeded this was 3 days of listening to 1960's-80's funk and soul. It feels silly to say but it was quite enlightning to connect the dots of how influencial some of this music was, along with already knowing modern songs that are covers or heavily sampled. It's amazing how decades on these older artist's music still holds such a special place in the music industry. Also reinforces even more how POC artists really are the backbone of society.
Some of my favourites I've been listening to so far:
- Flashlight - Parliament
- I'd Rather Be with You - Bootsy Collins
- Hair - Graham Central Station
- (Sittin' On) the Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding
- Get The Funk Out Ma Face - The Brothers Johnson
I really need to metaphorically get out of the house more and listen to more some genres.
22.9.24 - Artist Highlight: DARTZ
Kinda braindead rn since it's very late. Last week, I went to the highly anticipated Dunerats / FIDLAR show, after originally missing my opportunity back in 2022. The night featured a total of 4 bands: The Pingers, DARTZ, FIDLAR and Dunerats. They were all fantastic but my highlight of the evening was by far DARTZ and FIDLAR. DARTZ (NZ band) itched the brain so much: their songs are fun as hell and their performance was so engaging. I've been listening to their 2024 album Dangerous Day To Be A Cold One. It's always my favourite part of going to shows, getting introduced to smaller bands & I'm gonna see if I can see them again whilst they're still in Australia. I'm probably gonna edit this later.
11.9.24 - Artist Highlight: Ho99o9
I've been listening to Ho99o9 (pronounced "Horror") casually for a few months now, first discovered through 3TEETH's EndEx (2023) album and since then I've been seeing their name pop up in quite a few different artist collabs and features ( such as The Prodigy, JPEGMAFIA, Ghostemane, Corey Taylor and Health, once again ). They seemed to have a very extensive musical career, which is why I'm surprised I hadn't come across them until last year. Finally for the past few days, the deep dive of listening to most of their discography has begun. They're a punk rap duo formed in 2012 and they're itching the brain a lot at the moment. I'm still listening over everything thoroughly but every album so far has been consistently engaging, progressive and I really enjoy their distinct sound.
My favourite albums so far and some notable songs:
- Dead Bodies in the Lake (2015)
- United States Of Horror (2017)
- Cyber Warfare (2019)
- SKIN (2022) and the EP
- Cyber Cop [Unauthorized MP3.] (2018)
- Off The Meter I really enjoy the different vibe for this new one ^
- Lights Out
- Twist Of Fate/Cobra
- Plexiglass (Error)
- F.O.G. (Error)
- Master of Pain (Error)
- Face Tatt
- Bleed War
- Splash
- United States Of Horror
- BITE MY FACE (FEAT. COREY TAYLOR)
Big big favourite is their's and Corey Taylor's song, admittedly as a big Corey Taylor fan I like any music that man makes >_o but if I could liquify a song and inject it directly into my brain this one would probably be one of them.
Mostly been listening to Ho99o9 this week at work. It's been great for drowning out the unrelenting rage that naturally comes with customer service /hj :)
28.8.24 - Industrial Fixation
I've gone down the rabbit hole of industrial ambience/industrial music today. It's been quite an interesting journey to go down, being able to revisit Maenad Veyl whom I am already a fan of. I was originally exposed to their album Body Count (2019) a year or 2 ago. It was quite surreal since I had been listening to it on alone in a train carriage at night - optimum listening experience imo. They were on my radar again from listening to Health as I hadn't made the connection they collabed on the DISCO4::PARTII (2022) album until just the other day.
Side tangent - some notable songs from DISCO4::PARTII
- MURDER DEATH KILL
- GNOSTIC FLESH/MORTAL HELL
From listening to Veyl's Reassessment (2020), I then segued into Years of Denial who had featured, of which I quite like their vocals.
Then I came across Helena Hauff, specifically her 2015 album Discreet Desires. The album feels very raw and looking into her more she "records her tracks strictly using analog equipment, usually in one take" which I thought was rad as hell. I am a big fan of Sworn to Secrecy Part I & II. Moving on, I'm just starting to listen to a new artist Umwelt's Superior Life Forms (2019) as I type this out.
I hope to be able to listen through more of all of their discography and find some other industrial and analog artists that I enjoy. :)
In addition to my industrial rabbit hole, I was shown the website somafm.com which is one of my new favourite things. "listener-supported, commercial-free, underground/alternative radio" They have an industrial ambience station which I've been listening to. :P
14.8.24 - First Update
